We’re just several weeks away from the introduction of the Apple Watch Series 7, and expectations are starting to take shape. We’ve seen multiple different CAD renders showcasing the flat-edged Apple Watch Series 7 design, and now clones based on those renders have started to emerge in China. As shared by Majin Bu on Twitter this morning, Apple Watch Series 7 clones are popping up for sale in China in multiple different colors and finishes....

In order to comply with a ruling from The Netherlands authorities, late on Friday Apple announced that it would allow developers of dating apps to offer alternative payments systems other than Apple’s In-App Purchase system, thereby circumventing Apple’s traditional 15-30% IAP cut. However, Apple will still charge a commission on these purchases regardless (details yet to be disclosed). However, implementing this will not be straightforward. Developers will need to create and maintain a completely separate app binary which includes special entitlements, and is only made available in the Netherlands App Store....

Warner Bros. executives and Aquaman producers discuss the upcoming DC Comics movie directed by James Wan, teasing a new path for the DCEU. So far, the DC Films cinematic universe from Warner Bros. has been hit or miss. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad performed well at the box office despite mixed reviews, while Wonder Woman was a critical and financial success. Apple didn’t just set a new record for the company when it beat every forecast in the Q1 results announced yesterday, it set a new world record for the most profitable quarter of any company in history, says credit ratings giant Standard & Poor’s. Its net profit of $18B far exceeded the previous record of $15.9B, set by oil company ExxonMobil back in 2012. Meanwhile, worldwide PC shipments reached 80.6 million units in the third quarter of 2008, a 15 percent increase from the third quarter last year, the analysts said. We recently heard that Apple is planning to open a new retail store at The Dubai Mall in the United Arab Emirates, and today Apple officially unveiled its plans for the new location. Apple’s wearables business continues to grow, and new data today from Strategy Analytics underscores the impact of Apple Watch. While Apple doesn’t report unit sales for Apple Watch, Strategy Analytics estimates that Apple shipped 31 million units worldwide during 2019. The comparison emphasized by this report is against the Swiss watch industry, which sold 21 million units in 2019. A patent application relating to the Apple Watch is leading some to speculate that the company may be working on a mode where the screen is always on. A teardown of the Apple Watch Series 5 yesterday revealed that the internals are mostly the same as the Series 4. iFixit has now given the 40mm Apple Watch Series 5 the teardown treatment, and it turns out that it houses some major battery changes compared to last year’s model. Apple today announced a new initiative that will see makers of newspaper and magazine apps keep more of their subscription revenue when participating in the program. The Apple News Partner Program means that if a publisher has a significant presence inside the Apple News app, including adopting Apple’s custom Apple News Format for generating articles, that publisher will get a discount on the commission on subscriptions taken out inside their native iPhone and iPad app....

Apple’s SouthPark retail store in Charlotte, North Carolina will celebrate its grand reopening this upcoming Sunday, September 2nd at 11:00 A.M. The announcement comes after just over four months of renovation work. SouthPark’s original Apple store initially opened on March 12, 2004, but moved to a new and expanded location on May 25, 2013. The rather recent remodeling makes the store an anomaly, as Apple typically prioritizes older and more tired stores for redesigns....

Apple Services revenue is still growing strongly, says Morgan Stanley, but the performance of some of its competitors shows that the market is a tough one. The bank has downgraded its price target for AAPL from $164 to $156 … Katy Huberty’s investment note was seen by PED3.0. Apple on Tuesday stopped signing iOS 16.1.2, which means that iPhone and iPad users can no longer downgrade to this version of the operating system if they’re already running a newer version of iOS. This comes just a week after the company released iOS 16.2 to the public. Apple no longer signing iOS 16.1.2 iOS 16.1.2 was released by Apple on November 30 with enhancements to the Crash Detection feature for iPhone 14 models....

In March, Apple was ordered in an Eastern district Texas court to pay just over $300 million to Personalized Media Communications (PMC) after a multi-year lawsuit over alleged DRM infringements. Today Apple won a ruling that voids the March verdict with a judge essentially finding Personalized Media guilty of patent trolling. Reported by Bloomberg, the patent at the basis of the $308 million March judgment has now been found to be “unenforceable” after Apple appealed the earlier ruling....

As we await the release of Apple’s first quarter earnings tomorrow, some of the company’s suppliers are offering a peak at what we might see. As Bloomberg notes, both Qualcomm and Broadcom implied during their own respective earnings announcements that iPhone orders are slowing down more than normal for this time of year… Qualcomm said during its earnings release today that “orders from a large, thin modem customer” have decreased at a worse level than usual for this time of the year....
