According to GigaOM, Apple has scooped up the domain name www.iCloud.com from Xcerion, the maker of a cloud-based service. The deal is said to have gone down for somewhere in the range of $4.5m, and we don’t think Apple would pay that much for a domain name unless they would put it to good use. We think iCloud is a potential name for Apple’s upcoming locker service which should keep your music, photos, videos, and other media in the cloud....

Apple reports that there were overnight queues for the grand opening of its latest retail store, its first one in Taipei. Located in the landmark Taipei 101 skyscraper, the store opened on Saturday morning … Taiwan is a modern country with a strong electronics manufacturing sector, including Apple chipmaker TSMC. Apple acknowledged plans for the store last July, with the reported location confirmed last month. Apple had already shared some photos of the store in the run-up to opening, and has now provided some more from the opening day itself....

Apple’s #ShotoniPhone campaign has grown tremendously over the years with everyday users tweeting pictures or videos on Twitter and Instagram. Today, Apple is sharing a compilation of photos and videos shot on iPhone XS using the new Depth Control. This latest compilation comes after Apple touted real images from XS users earlier this month. The update, as we know, will be iOS 12.1 which is slated to be released soon. Apple’s online store has gone down this evening to prepare for the launch of the Apple Watch and 12-inch MacBook. When the store returns, the Apple Watch will be available for pre-order, while the 12-inch MacBook will be available for purchase. The Apple Watch will launch on April 24th. The next time you look for help with one of your devices, beware of Apple Support scams. With multiple tech support scams out there, bad actors are looking to take your money. One Denver woman found out the hard way after seeking help with her new iPhone 13. After purchasing her new iPhone, Cookie Pridemore found herself locked out and needing help to get back in. Using her husband’s phone, she proceeded to search online for Apple’s customer service number where she called the first number that popped up....

New chip analysis of the A8X powering the iPad Air 2 has revealed that it is even more powerful than it initially appeared. Further analysis by AnandTech showed that initial guesses as to the GPU specification of the Apple A8X chip, exclusively available in the iPad Air 2, were wrong. In fact, the chip uses a unique 8 cluster design. AnandTech describes the discovery as “even better than I thought”. Although the customizations are limited, this represents a big step for the company as it is now dabbling in both custom CPU and GPU engineering, even if the leap over generally-available components in this instance is small....

Earlier today, Apple announced that it will be holding its fall event on October 22nd. The event will take place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, California. However, like in some past years, Apple will hold a simultaneous event to cater to media not located in the United States. For its September 10 iPhone event, Apple held simultaneous satellite streams in Berlin, Tokyo, and Beijing. For the upcoming event, the stream will be held in London, according to members of international media invited to the stream....

Apple is continuing its PR blitz for Apple TV+ with Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard hitting the covers of the latest issue of Emmy Magazine, promoting the sci-fi thriller See. Apple’s production budget for See is believed to be in excess of $15 million per episode. Apple has updated its iOS 8 terms of use, according to The Guardian, to note that developers are not allowed to resell any information gained through the upcoming HealthKit framework. The HealthKit software was announced as part of a larger event earlier this year, but it was only with the most recent beta that Apple made note of this restriction. The move is not unexpected, as it would be very much against Apple’s modus operandi to allow developers access to such crucial data without some restrictions on its use in place as a protection for users....

We’re anxiously waiting for Apple to announce the next iPhone event, but there’s news out of Nikkei Asia that could prove disappointing for Apple Watch customers. Citing sources familiar with Apple Watch Series 7 production, the outlet reports that the redesigned hardware (renders pictured above) is causing production delays ahead of launch. Apple typically releases major new updates to the Apple Watch in September (save for last year’s slight delay due to COVID)....

Update 2: It looks like Apple prematurely rolled out the feature to many countries and quickly removed it. Apple earlier this year acquired popular sleep tracking platform Beddit for an undisclosed amount. While the company has remained independent in its product offerings, it today updated its website to direct customer service requests through Apple… The change was first noted by Bloomberg. If you head to Beddit’s customer support webpage, you’ll see that it now asks users to contact Apple for help: The change isn’t incredibly notable, but it does signal that Apple is seemingly keeping the Beddit platform alive and operational for users....

Apple will start to collect imagery to expand the Apple Maps feature ‘Look Around’ to Austria starting next week until December. According to the Austrian website Der Standard, people will start to see dozens of Apple cars navigating in the country. As for now, only cars will record the street through the next months, not people with cameras on backpacks, for example. In many ways, Look Around is Apple’s version of Google’s popular and useful Street View feature....

Apple has officially unveiled the new redesigned MacBook Pro at its special event in Cupertino, California. Apple is now live on stage at the Yerba Buena Arts Center in California, where Vice President of Worldwide iOS Product Marketing Greg Joswiak just announced the fifth-generation iPod touch. We already got a look at Apple’s redesigned earphones and shared some more details this morning including the “EarPods” name. Apple has now officially unveiled the new “EarPods” and explained they have been in the works for the last three years. The company also confirmed that the new Earpods would come packaged with the new iPod touch lineup, iPod nanos, and the iPhone 5. The EarPods will also be available as a standalone accessory starting today, but there is no word on pricing as of yet....

The fall detection feature on Apple Watch is being credited with alerting emergency services after a 92-year-old farmer fell from a ladder. As reported by KETV in Omaha, Nebraska, Jim Salsman fell from his ladder and “would’ve been dead” without the help from his Apple Watch. Salsman climbed a 21-foot ladder last month to “secure a grain bin from pigeons” (remember, this is Nebraska). He says he was stable on the ladder until a gust of wind came along and pushed the ladder by 2 feet....

Update 2: The security researcher who discovered the privacy failure reports that Apple has now fixed it. As of iOS 15.4 and watchOS 8.5 the Mail app on the watch no longer leaks the IP address when downloading remote content.
