We noted yesterday that the abandonment of Apple Watch apps continues. It’s a trend that doesn’t surprise me, because I think too many companies based their apps on an unrealistic idea of how most people use their Watch … We can officially add Uber to the long list of major brands that have abandoned their Apple Watch apps. The ride-sharing company has quietly discontinued its watchOS app, displaying a brief message to users who try to launch it....

If you wanted to get your hands on something (partly) designed by Marc Newson, the Apple Watch is probably the cheapest option out there. Even the $17,000 top-of-the-range Edition model might look a little more reasonable after learning that a Newson-designed lounge chair just sold at a London auction for $3.7M. Still, when you’re laying out a few million on a chair, you can at least be confident it’s the most comfortable chair in the world, right?...

Now that Android Wear is officially compatible with iOS devices there’s a lot more smartwatch love to go around, at least for Apple fans. Android users have had a taste of the first generation, but Motorola’s new Moto 360 is one of the many new options available for both sides for the fence. Last week at Apple’s yearly briefing for accessory makers in its Made-for-iPhone/iPad (MFi) licensing program, the company unveiled new Lightning connectors and specs for Lightning receptacles that will soon be available for implementation in MFi accessories. The new Lightning receptacle, scheduled to start shipping next year, will allow accessory makers to build new types of accessories that include a port for Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector previously reserved for its own iOS devices (pictured above)....

Other than the launch of the new Instagram clone “Facebook Camera” app, the biggest update today goes to the popular Tweetbot Twitter client for iPhone that is now at version 2.4. Included in the massive update is a new search view, as well as access to Trends, Top Tweets, and People that are now together in a single browse section. Nearby tweets were added with an option to change the location, and a ton of improvements to search, including location-based keywords and the ability to change trends’ location from within search view....

UPDATE: Read everything revealed by the Aquaman set visit reports. Although the name of the movie is Aquaman, expect Mera to also turn up as a superhero in the movie, and not as Aquawoman. Mera actress Amber Heard has made it clear this is one of the things that made her interested in the role. Aquaman will tell the origin story of Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa), a half Atlantean and half human man who reluctantly becomes king of an underwater kingdom....

Apple’s at the top of the pack when it comes to choosing which browser you want to use with Windows in Europe – and Mozilla is furious at the deal done for detente in the EU’s spat with Microsoft. Microsoft has proposed inclusion of a ballot screen through which customers get to choose which browser from a list of five they want included on their Windows installation, ending the company’s insistence on bundling Internet Explorer with MS-powered ‘puters in Europe....

Apple has today updated its iOS version statistics for developers. The company says that 81% of all iPhone and iPod touch devices now run iOS 13, while 73% of iPads now run iPadOS. According to Apple’s website, 92% of iPhones introduced in the last four years are running iOS 13, while 7% are still running iOS 12 and only 2% are running previous versions of iOS. When considering all the iPhone and iPod touch models ever shipped, 81% of devices are running iOS 13, while 13% are running iOS 12 and 6% are running an earlier version of iOS....

Apple has started sending out invitations to AppleSeed users inviting them to take advantage of a new beta seed for Windows, as shown in the screenshot above. The beta will enable features that would normally be reserved for OS X Yosemite or iOS 8, such as iCloud Drive, on the Microsoft-built operating system. Developers were previously able to download this software for testing, but this is the first time that non-developer users have been granted access....

Apple last year announced a change in the App Store guidelines that would require all apps that support account creation to offer an in-app option for letting users delete their accounts. However, this requirement has been delayed twice. Now the company has set a new deadline for developers to update their apps according to the new guideline. Starting June 30, 2022, all apps available in the App Store that somehow let users create a new account must also offer a way to let them delete that account if they want to....

Apple just wrapped its Mac-centric event in Cupertino and as usual, the company shared a variety of videos during the keynote highlighting its new products. Now, Apple has uploaded those videos to YouTube so you can have a second look at them. Apple uploaded two versions of its Accessibility video that kicked off the keynote, one with audio descriptions throughout and one without. Apple today announced a revamped Accessibility website, as well....

Update: Apple has nearly finished the large outdoor white logo on Moscone West building and is also hanging ASCII-art theme banners on the opposite street at the Metreon. More photos below. Apple has started decorating its venues for WWDC 2016, which kicks off on Monday, with workers starting to apply a massive Apple logo onto the side of Moscone West. Apple will use Moscone West for all of the week apart from Monday; the WWDC keynote will be held at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium....

In mid-April we reported that due to constraints of replacement units for the discontinued white 16GB GSM iPhone 4, Apple Store Genius Bars were told to swap out these devices for a 16GB white iPhone 4S. Users facing hardware related problems with their 16GB iPhone 4s were essentially given free upgrades to the Siri, A5-chip, 8MP camera-packing iPhone 4S. This was until earlier this week: Apple has almost completely caught up with demand for the constrained white iPhone 4 16GB replacements units....

Just over four months since the Apple Watch began its Apple Retail Store debut for try-ons, Apple has started to tweak the process this week, according to Apple Retail employees. Until this week, a customer who walked into an Apple Store seeking to try on Apple Watch was required to make an appointment and provide details such as their name and Apple ID to an Apple Store employees. For this week forward, Apple Stores are speeding up the try-on process by dropping the former appointment requirement and not requiring potential customers to share their information with the store employee....

Nothing. There’s no difference between Apple Trade In and Apple GiveBack. Just before Earth Day 2018, Apple rebranded its Trade In program as GiveBack, and around Earth Day 2019, Apple walked back that branding change and is now once again referring to its trade in program as Apple Trade In. The branding change was instituted in 2018 to attract attention to the trade in program, highlighting how customers can “recycle devices and do something good for the planet through Apple GiveBack”:...

Apple TV+ will soon get a documentary about Steve Martin’s life and career as A24 will produce it alongside Morgan Neville and Caitrin Rogers’s Tremolo Productions. This will be another addition to the growing list of Apple Original documentaries. As exclusively reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Steve Martin’s doc is still untitled but will be broken into two parts. The film will be directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville. According to the publication, Steve Martin has been nominated for three Emmy Awards for his work on the Hulu comedy Only Murders in the Building and is the star of The Jerk, Roxanne, Parenthood, and more....

Whatever you think of the material on offer, you can’t really deny that Apple TV+ shows look amazing. With most TV+ content offering 4K HDR video and Dolby Atmos sound, Apple is flexing its CDN muscles with its new streaming service. In a forum post, FlatpanelsHD editor-in-chief Rasmus Larsen has now put some numbers to the claims. Rasmus Larsen writes that TV+ shows have the highest streaming quality for 4K out of all the services on the market at the moment, and eclipses most iTunes movies in bit rates....

You may have forgotten about it, but the latest version of the Apple TV 4K is officially slated to launch to buyers on Friday. At its WWDC 2018 keynote, Apple has officially unveiled macOS 10.14 Mojave. The update will be available later this year to Mac users and includes new features, interface tweaks, and more. One of the more timely WWDC announcements was Apple Watch handwashing detection. The coronavirus crisis means everyone is being encouraged to wash their hands more frequently, and to ensure that we’re doing so thoroughly. But the handwashing detection feature wasn’t developed hastily in response, says Apple, but was rather years in development … WHO and CDC guidelines recommend handwashing for at least 20 seconds, and watchOS 7 aims to automatically detect when you’re washing your hands, and to start a 20-second countdown timer with a cute animation....
