Aquaman’s movie ends in a fight, but it starts as a classic love story between his parents, a humble lighthouse keeper and the Queen of Atlantis. And while some have criticized that fairy tale flashback as a bit too ‘sentimental’ or ‘cheesy’ to work, director James Wan says it’s the only way he was ever going to tell his Aquaman origin. The criticisms are anything but surprising, in an age when even Marvel movies have become buffets of brooding, grim, and defeated heroes....

Before its premiere, Aquaman was a bit of a question mark for the often troubled DCEU. The character has never had the same mainstream success as Batman or Superman. Furthermore, Justice League - which was the proper debut of Jason Momoa’s iteration of Aquaman - underperformed and is considered a box office disappointment. Despite those fears and issues, Aquaman is shaping up to be one of, if not the most successful, superhero franchise for DC Comics and Warner Bros....

Apple yesterday released a preview of its upcoming all-new Photos app for Mac, which replaces iPhoto and Aperture with a simpler all-in-one photo editor and library manager. Most of the discussion of Photos focused on the huge number of changes from iPhoto and Aperture, burying one very important detail: Apple is changing the way it handles cloud-based photo storage. Before Photos, Apple offered free storage of photos with limitations in a feature called Photo Stream, which didn’t count against iCloud storage....

Shortly after Apple announced it would be ending its built-in photo printing service, RR Donnelley came forward and shared that it was the vendor providing the service for Apple and announced its upcoming Motif Photos app extension for Mac. Now Motif has officially arrived for iOS (after quietly launching last month) to bring an easy way for Apple users to print beautiful photos books right from iPhone and iPad. On its French YouTube channel this evening, Apple has shared a short film from French director Michel Gondry. The film, entitled “Détour,” was shot completely on an iPhone and was funded by Apple. The original Apple Watch is currently set to face an import tariff of 10% under the latest edition of tariff proposals seen. While iPhones, iPads and Macs should be exempt, the smartwatch is one of a number of devices currently slated to fall foul of the Trump administration’s trade war with China … Others include several Fitbit activity trackers and three Sonos speakers, including the popular Play 5, reports Reuters....

A collector has managed to obtain six seemingly-genuine Apple Watch prototypes which date to a year before the launch of the wearable device. The man says that all the prototypes are broken, but are sufficiently complete that he believes they can be repaired … Motherboard says the devices are consistent with prototype iPhones it knows to be genuine. Apple has always had policies to not provide repair services for lost or stolen devices, but only if they had the Find My feature enabled. Now the company will also deny iPhone repairs if the device is reported as lost or stolen in the GSMA Device Registry. According to an internal memo sent to Apple Store employees and Apple Authorized Service Providers (via MacRumors), the company will now use the GSMA Device Registry database to check if a device is registered as lost before providing any repairs....

DC Extended Universe solo film Aquaman is set to arrive in the fall of next year, following the release of the Wonder Woman solo movie this June and Zack Snyder’s Justice League bringing the biggest superheroes of the DCEU together, this November. Things are moving along smoothly on the Aquaman front right now, with pre-production well underway ahead of Aquaman’s filming start date this upcoming May in Australia (among other locations)....

Earlier this year, Apple began renovations of its Fifth Avenue retail store with the goal of more than doubling its size. Details on the project have been somewhat unclear throughout the project, but a new report today from MacMagazine says that Apple’s flagship retail location will reopen towards the end of 2018… The report explains that construction is currently slated to come to an end on October 31st, 2018, that’s according to signage posted around the construction site....

When the iPhone 13 was first released in September, repair shops quickly noticed that if you replaced the display, Face ID would stop working. Now, Apple is backtracking on this decision to limit iPhone 13 screen repairs, according to a new report from The Verge. As iFixit detailed in-depth last week, this change to the iPhone 13 repair process meant that repair shops would need to move over a tiny control chip from the original screen to the new screen in order to retain Face ID support....

This is one of the most important features announced during the WWDC21 keynote that was postponed and it’s now launching. With SharePlay, users are able to make a FaceTime call while listening to songs, watching movies, and TV shows....

At the “It’s show time” event earlier this week, Apple CEO Tim Cook invited several new faces on stage to explain the company’s newfound Services push. One of those people was Peter Stern, Apple’s VP of Services. A new profile from Digiday sheds more light on Stern’s career and his role at Apple. Stern joined Apple in 2016 after serving in various senior roles at Time Warner Cable. Last year, Eddy Cue put Stern in charge of business operations for Services....

The American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) is out with its yearly study on PC and tablet satisfaction in the US. Apple just managed to edge out Samsung and once again earned the highest PC and tablet ratings from consumers with iPad and Mac. However, compared to the customer satisfaction scores Apple often shares, these are notably lower. The PC and tablet market overall saw customer satisfaction remain unchanged in the US as ACSI reports that came in at 78/100 just like last year....

Apple’s Developer Center is now allowing certain developers to add up to 200 iOS devices to their account, double the previous amount allowed. Devices registered in this list can beta test a developer’s applications as well as the unreleased versions of iOS (and related software like iTunes). Developers have been wanting the limit to increase for quite some time, since removing a device does not increase the count again until membership is renewed:...

As Apple continues to look to India as a market for extraordinary growth, it has now stopped selling the iPhone 4s and iPhone 5c in the country in an effort to raise the average selling prices of its devices and increase profits. The Economic Times reports that Apple made the decision due to its profitability and average selling price being “under strain” in India. Apple had been selling the iPhone 4s in India for as little as Rs 12,000 ($175 USD), while the iPhone 5c had been available for Rs 20,000 ($292 USD)....

Apple is raising awareness for World AIDS Day, as part of its ongoing partnership with (RED) charity. Apple Watch users can show their support by downloading a selection of special red-themed watch face configurations. Apple retail will also be promoting PRODUCT(RED) in the stores, with new window displays. As usual, a portion of every PRODUCT(RED) Apple product sold goes to the (RED) Global Fund. Apple is rolling out additional changes to its retail store practices as the coronavirus pandemic continues. Business Insider reports that Apple Store employees are being told not to offer Apple Watch or AirPods try-ons for the foreseeable future. This is part of Apple’s work to protect Apple Store employees and customers during the coronavirus outbreak, the report says, but there is not an outright ban on try-ons. If a customer specifically requests to try-on AirPods or an Apple Watch, employees can oblige....
