Amber Heard’s Mera goes on the run in a new leaked set photo from next year’s Aquaman standalone film. Following his brief introduction in last year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, fans are finally going to get to spend some substantial time with Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry/Aquaman later this year in Justice League, But Momoa’s presence in the DCEU is only going to continue growing after that film’s release, with the actor set to star in and lead his own Aquaman solo film next year, which will be the first DCEU film to hit theaters after Justice League, and is set to be directed by The Conjuring director, James Wan.
The film also boasts one of the more impressive casts for a DC film to date, with Momoa set to star in the film alongside Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Michael Beach, and more. While Warner Bros. and Wan have been understandably tight-lipped about releasing any official story details from the film, with principal photography on Aquaman having been underway in Austrailia for several months now, fans have gotten some unofficial confirmations about the film’s characters and locations through set photos and casting calls.
The unofficial looks at Aquaman only continue today, with the release of a brand new set photo from the film’s Australia-based production (via Reddit). And while blurry, the image does feature Heard’s Mera - who will play a prominent role in the film - running across rooftops away from some of her pursuers, who happen to be dressed as Atlantean soldiers. Aquaman filming : Atlantean Army chasing Mera? from DCEUleaks
While there’s no way of knowing the context or lead up to this scene is in the film, the image of Mera running away from Atlantean soldiers does play into some of the previous rumors about the central story and conflict in Aquaman. Specifically, this scene could be a direct result of the battle between Momoa’s Arthur Curry and his half-brother, Orm/Ocean Master (Wilson).
The sibling rivalry between the two characters has made Ocean Master a frequent villain in the Aquaman comics, with him and Arthur Curry often going to war over who deserves to rule on the throne of Atlantis. And considering it was just recently confirmed by Momoa that Ocean Master would indeed be the main villain of Aquaman this past month at SDCC, it’s easy to assume that the Atlantean soldiers targeting Mera are somehow involved in a betrayal/coup orchestrated by Orm as a way to steal the throne for himself. Judging by this photo, it looks like Arthur Curry won’t be the only one sent on the run by Orm’s betrayal. Assuming, of course, that is how things play out in Aquaman, when it hits theaters next year.
