It’s been a little over five months since James Wan’s Aquaman movie wrapped principal photography, but King Nereus actor Dolph Lundgren has confirmed on social media that the movie is currently undergoing additional photography. Starring Jason Momoa in the titular role, Aquaman will be the first DC movie to arrive in theaters since last year’s somewhat lackluster team-up movie, Justice League. Still, hopes are high for this solo outing, since fans responded positively to Momoa’s version of Arthur Curry, and Wan has plenty of hits under his belt.
Lundgren plays King Nereus, the father of Amber Heard’s character, Mera. Nereus rules over Xebel, an underwater kingdom adjacent to Atlantis, and Lundgren has said Nereus is preoccupied with “trying to avoid war between the surface dwellers and the people of Atlantis.” The actor has had a busy schedule of late, since he’s also reprising his role as Ivan Drago in Creed 2, and starring in an Italian thriller called The Tracker.
Confirmation that Aquaman is undergoing additional photography came via an Instagram Story on Lundgren’s account, which showed the actor on the road and was captioned with “Ready for my King Nereus costume.” Sadly, he didn’t go on to share a photo of his King Nereus costume - though last summer we did get to see a short video clip of him practising his underwater swimming moves.
Although talk of reshoots may make fans nervous, given that Justice League’s reshoots become closely associated with that movie’s problems, there’s no need to worry; additional photography is a standard part of any movie production. Aquaman has reportedly been very well-received in early test screenings, so the additional filming is likely just to redo certain shots that don’t look right, rework scenes that test audiences had criticisms of, or throw in ideas that came up during post-production.
DC fans have been getting antsy for an Aquaman trailer recently, following a rumor that a trailer was set to debut at Wonder Con 2018 this weekend. Wan took to Twitter to address the trailer anticipation, explaining that “this movie is filled to the gills with VFX” and that “even shots for the trailers take forever to do.” Again, since the movie is still eight months away from release, the fact that we haven’t seen a trailer yet is no cause for concern.
Still, we definitely can’t wait to see Lundgren in action as an underwater king, so let’s hope it doesn’t take too much longer to finish those VFX shots!
