The latest images from the Aquaman movie offer the first official look at Patrick Wilson and Willem Dafoe as the Atlanteans King Orm and Vulko. Orm, also known as Ocean Master, is Arthur Curry’s (Jason Momoa) half-brother and, much like he typically does in the world of DC Comics, serves as the main antagonist in the Aquaman solo film. Vulko, meanwhile, is an ocean-dweller who usually acts as a mentor and ally to Arthur. He was originally slated to make his big screen debut in last year’s Justice League, but Dafoe’s scenes ended up on the cutting room floor over the course of that movie’s now-infamous reshoots.
With the first Aquaman trailer expected to drop online any day now, the initial wave of marketing for James Wan’s DC superhero film is getting fully underway. The movie will once again feature Momoa front and center as the man who would be king (of Atlantis), along with Amber Heard, who’s reprising her role as Mera (Arthur’s love interest and Atlantean royalty herself) after her brief appearance in Justice League. Among the actors set to appear in the DC cinematic universe for the first time in Wan’s film are Nicole Kidman as Queen Atlanna (Arthur’s mom), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as David Kane (aka. Black Manta) and, as mentioned earlier, Wilson and Dafoe.
EW published the first official looks at Kidman as Atlanna and Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta earlier today, but isn’t done promoting Wan’s underwater DC adventure just yet. The site has now released several additional photos from the film, including the following screenshots of Orm and Vulko (well, Vulko from the back, anyway). EW has also revealed another image of Kidman as Atlanna, along with fresh photos of Momoa and Heard in the film. Take a look, below.
With Orm serving as the main threat in Aquaman, Wan’s film will examine the familial rivalry between the character and his half-human brother, Arthur, as well as Orm’s desire to declare war on all surface-dwelling humans. For Wan and Wilson, the DC tentpole marks their fifth time working together after their efforts on the first two Insidious movies and The Conjuring 1 & 2. The pair have established a strong collaborative dynamic and continue to bring out the best in one another, so that certainly bodes well for their reunion here.
Dafoe, for his part, isn’t the only one whose back-of-the-head shows up in these photos. The images also highlight a scene where Atlanna presents a baby Arthur to his human father, Thomas Curry (Temuera Morrison). Wan’s film isn’t strictly an origin story for the titular superhero but, like Man of Steel and Wonder Woman, the movie will reveal more about Arthur’s backstory and how he came to be the (half-Atlantean) man that he is today. Considering that Justice League only had a single dialogue-driven scene that paints Aquaman’s origins in broad strokes, it will be nice to actually see more of the character’s history on the big screen in Wan’s movie.
