Aquaman has not started filming yet, but its stars are hard at work preparing for the rigors that will come with their roles. Star Jason Momoa starts shooting his scenes in a few months, but he’s already training with martial arts experts and fight choreographers to mold him into the best Aquaman possible – for the action scenes, anyway.
Co-star Amber Heard has also been seen in a recent training video at 87Eleven Action Design, which has performed various services for recent action hits like John Wick and Jurassic World. Momoa is definitely in good hands with the trainers on Aquaman, having already appeared practicing sword fighting. He’s popped up online in the middle of his training for the film once again – and this time, he brought the aquatic superhero’s iconic trident along with him.
87Eleven Action Design posted a new photo to its Instagram account on Thursday, showing Momoa smiling with trainer Pat Tray (middle). Tray is holding a massive trident that is ostensibly the same that you will see in Aquaman. Tray is a world-renowned martial arts trainer and former Navy SEAL, having once served as the SEALs’ hand-to-hand combat instructor for over a decade.
Honored to have Pat Tray of @tridentmma teach us the secret scrolls this week. #87eleven, #bjj, #aquaman, #trident, #jasonmamoa A post shared by 87Eleven Action Design (@87elevenaction) on Feb 16, 2017 at 10:15am PST
Tray works primarily at the coincidentally named Trident MMA in Woodbridge, VA. The trident he is holding in the photo looks almost completely unchanged from the one seen in other Aquaman promotional photos, but it’s easily the clearest look yet at Aquaman’s weapon of choice. “Honored to have Pat Tray of @tridentmma teach us the secret scrolls this week,” the photo’s caption reads.
Momoa looks as happy as he has ever looked in the behind-the-scenes images at the actor on the set of both Aquaman and this summer’s Justice League. The actor’s gleeful grin perfectly highlights the enthusiasm he’s already shown for the role and excitement to get to work on the project. He’s previously had chances to be a leading man, but Aquaman represents his biggest opportunity yet to take his stardom to another level. He appears to be enjoying the process, however rigorous it may be.
Aquaman certainly has a fantastic team of trainers, stunt coordinators, and fight choreographers on board with 87Eleven and Trident MMA. But action and visuals haven’t exactly been the problem with DC’s recent cinematic output. If the narrative execution in Justice League and Wonder Woman can’t improve upon the lackluster Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, that wouldn’t bode well for Aquaman. But Momoa’s star power, and the action he’ll be involved in, surely won’t be an issue.
