Though 2013’s Man of Steel is the first entry into the DCEU, it wasn’t until last year’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice that DC and Warner Bros.’s shared universe got going in earnest. That was quickly followed by Suicide Squad, and later this year Wonder Woman and Justice League will continue to flesh out DC’s cinematic world. From there, the only film that seems to be holding to its release date is 2018’s Aquaman. Though the King of the Seas was teased in BvS along with the other heroes of the DCEU, Justice League will be the first time we see him and many of his teammates get the spotlight. From there, director James Wan and star Jason Momoa are hoping their Aquaman solo film can win over audiences and show them whole new worlds.
So far, the film’s supporting cast seems to be filling out nicely. Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson and Willem Dafoe have joined as Mera, Ocean Master, and Vulko, respectively. Recently, it was also reported that Jango Fett actor Temeura Morrison was in talks to play Aquaman’s father, with Nicole Kidman possibly playing his mother. We also learned that Black Manta will be one of the movie’s antagonists, with actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (The Get Down) tackling the role. Aside from that, not much is known about the film, but it’s likely to be pretty physical in nature.
We recently got a glimpse of the training Heard is undergoing to play Mera, and a new video from Hyperfly offers us a glimpse into the fight training that Momoa is undertaking for his role as Aquaman/Arthur Curry:

Sadly, much of the video is obscured by multiple attempts at product placement for the facility Momoa is training at and the brands associated with it. Still, we get to see that Momoa’s Aquaman will likely be employing swords as he battles opponents. It’s also possible this training is for the use of his famous trident, as he’s mostly seen parrying in the video. Either way, it’s nice to see Momoa brushing up on the skills that he acquired both while playing Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones and starring in the 2011 Conan the Barbarian reboot.
Momoa is certainly no stranger to stage combat, and part of the work required to make Aquaman seem like a viable powerhouse and not a joke will be his fighting prowess. While his command of marine life will certainly prove useful underwater, it won’t help the superhero much on land. While he’s got the standard super-strength, an ability to employ various weapons will go a long way in helping him take on the threats he and his kingdom face. With filming for Aquaman set to begin soon in Australia, we should know more about those threats in the foreseeable future.
