Warner Bros. has yet to lock James Wan to direct the follow-up for Aquaman. Tasked to craft the origin story for Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry, it would be an understatement to say that the director known for his work in the Conjuring franchise and Furious 7 is facing immense pressure to deliver. The upcoming movie marks DC’s return to the world of comic book movies one year after the financial disappointment that was Justice League.

Following his brief introduction in Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and an official debut in Justice League, Aquaman will reunite fans with Arthur as he goes off on his own adventure without the help from his newfound allies. He comes to Atlantis to prove that he’s the rightful heir to the throne, but his personal mission won’t be a walk in the park with his step-brother, Orm (Patrick Wilson) standing in his path.

Variety caught up with Wan during the red carpet premiere of Aquaman, where he was asked about him coming back to do the sequel. As previously reported, Warner Bros. is reportedly already discussing what comes next for the superhero following the generally positive buzz that his first film is generating ahead of its North American debut. However, Wan revealed that he hasn’t signed on anything else past the upcoming film and would rather not talk about what lies ahead but focus on the present project. Watch his interview below:

Considering what Wan was able to accomplish in Aquaman, it would make sense if he was brought back for the planned sequel. The world-building and attention to detail alone (which would be integral to continue in the follow-up movie) are impressive, and it would be nice to see what other things he can bring to the DCEU table given what’s he did on his first crack at the franchise. Finally, with seemingly a good working rapport with the lead actors, things will be much easier for Warner Bros. if they get the same combination of people that made Aquaman, which people seem to generally like.

Wan being tightlipped about the possibility of returning for the sequel for Aquaman is totally understandable. At this point, chances are that any rumblings about a follow-up film aren’t official yet, that means that nothing is set in stone with regard to the future of the DC sub-franchise in the bigger scheme of things. But that’s not to say that he hasn’t been approached for the gig either. Even with universally-praised Wonder Woman, it took quite a while before Patty Jenkins agreed to helm Wonder Woman 1984 - and she negotiated a bigger pay, which is only deserving considering what she and her team delivered on the Gal Gadot movie. In the meantime, fans can look forward to the release of the latest installment in the DCEU next week.
