Aquaman is well into its pre-production schedule, with Jason Momoa expected to begin shooting his scenes in about four months. Much has been made of the importance of the role to the titular star, who is likely to face some of the most rigorous action training of his career in one of his first big-budget leading roles. His background and enthusiasm for the role has him well prepared for the role of Aquaman.
Co-star Amber Heard is also in for some serious training for her role as Mera, alongside Momoa as Arthur Curry/Aquaman. Both actors likely know what’s in store for them after their work on Justice League. A new video has surfaced online giving a quick peek into the kind of training that Heard is doing – and it appears that she will have her share of hand-to-hand combat.
The owner and editor-in-chief of SMTV Reports, who goes by Seán, shared a video to his Twitter account on Sunday showing Heard training for her role as Mera with the caption “Mera in the making.” The video comes over two weeks after Heard appeared in an Instagram photo with her makeup artist for Aquaman. In the video, she throws a flurry of playful jabs toward the camera before walking away with a satisfied grin.

According to a later tweet by Seán, Heard’s training took place at the 87Eleven Action Design studio, where Momoa also trained for his role as Aquaman. 87Eleven describes itself on its Facebook page as “the industry’s premier Action Design and Fight Choreography Team.” The studio also performed various action and stunt services for John Wick, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Pt. 1, and Jurassic World.
The recent action output for 87Eleven Studios is certainly impressive, so Momoa and Heard could be in good hands with their training. If the fight scenes for Aquaman’s stars can result in anything approaching the level of John Wick, then the future bodes well for DC’s bet on branching out from Justice League. Heard also seems to be enjoying herself, so it’s a good sign that she will bring similar energy to the role of Mera.
Action has not been the issue, however, with recent DC films. Warner Bros. has released Muddled polarizing efforts from DC Entertainment, with the likes of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, a run that simply hasn’t measured up to the studio’s competition. But based on the teams involved in creating the action set pieces for Aquaman, there’s a chance that the movie will excel in that department.
